He was born in Forres, Scotland 1943, and at the age of 18 started training at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen. Initially he studied graphic design before later moving into jewellery silversmithing. The workshop was set up at Lundin Links on the Fife Coast in Scotland where his father had retired and the jewellery workshop was built alongside on this land at Mill Wynd, next to the Crusoe Hall. He specialised in silver designs often with enamel work, including brooches, earrings, pendants and cufflinks. For a period, an annual summer school ran at the workshop, where students from around the world would come to learn from Norman. Norman Grants father retired to Lundin links and the house he bought had the land that this workshop was built on, originally garages. He found his work in demand in London Shops such as Liberty of London and Harrods and was also picked up by Bonwit Teller and Marshall Field in America.

Don Beaton became a director of Dust Jewellery in charge of production with Norman Grant the designer and John Flegg as MD and sales. Jim Ward joined in the late 79's and developed Titanium jewellery.
Keith Hunter joined in the 1980s. The workshops grew to include the buildings on opposite side of the road and a'machine shop' on the main road.
